Breckenridge, CO
Spear Point Energy is a partner in a 470 kW solar project in the Town of Breckenridge. The 470 kW project consists of seven separate solar arrays, ranging in size from 9 kW to 103 kW. Spear Point Energy and its investors provided the majority of the equity for the project which has a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement with the town.. Electricity generation for the first full year of service is projected at 622,000 kWh. The project, which went into commercial operation on August 20, 2011, is expected to save the town $2,585,000 in avoided costs compared with carbon-fueled electricity over its useful lifetime. The solar arrays power town facilities including the recreation center, the ice rink, the fleet maintenance complex, the golf course maintenance and irrigation facilities and the police station. The Town of Breckenridge was founded in 1859 as a gold mining town, and is currently a major destination for high-country recreational activities such as skiing, hiking and biking.
Oberlin College, OH
Spear Point Energy has provided a 25 year PPA to Oberlin Collegefor a 2.278 MW solar project to move the college closer to its strategic goal of sustainability and commitment to carbon neutrality. As the project developer and system owner, Spear Point Energy coordinated design & engineering, negotiated the Power Purchase Agreement and Lease needed to make the system a reality. In addition to aligning with the college’s environmental objectives, the system needed to clear economic benchmarks and result in no net increases in energy costs for the college. Construction will begin in the spring of 2012, with the completed system expected to be placed in service in the fall of 2012.
Santa Monica Place Mall
A national mall owner selected Spear Point Energy to finance a 109 kW PV solar energy installation on the roof of the Santa Monica Place Mall in California. The project consists of 506 solar panels spread across 3 of the mall’s roofs. Through a Power Purchase Agreement, the mall owner agreed to purchase power from the system for 20 years. Spear Point Energy contracted with an EPC contractor to engineer and construct the project which was completed and placed in service in October 2011. The solar energy installation contributed towards the mall’s LEED certification. The system required no up-front cost from the building owner, as Spear Point Energy paid for and owns 100% of the system. Spear Point Energy’s CEO Sam Houston commented, “We are proud to work with this building owner to provide them clean, locally produced power at a competitive rate.” The system provides power for common areas and lighting.
Pasadena Windsor Reservoir
Spear Point Energy placed a 664 kW solar energy installation in April 2011 on the covered roof of the City of Pasadena’s Windsor Reservoir complex. The installation consists of 2,828 solar panel modules that cover the majority of the reservoir’s rooftop. Through a Power Purchase Agreement, the City of Pasadena agreed to buy electricity generated from the solar system over the next 20 years. The installation is financed and owned by Spear Point Energy. The electricity that the city purchases from Spear Point Energy will power the reservoir’s pumps. City officials were attracted to the project as it aligns with the city’s commitment to renewable energy and fiscal responsibility as the city will buy electricity from the installation at discounted prices. The system required no up-front cost from the city, as Spear Point Energy paid for 100% of the system. According to Erik Klinkner, Chief Deputy of Pasadena Water and Power, “The Windsor Reservoir rooftop represents a huge untapped potential for generating clean solar power. We are thrilled that our partnership with Spear Point Energy will enable us to realize this potential and advance our renewable energy goals.”
City of Aurora Municipal Building
Spear Point Energy has invested equity in a 300kW solar installation on 3 buildings owned by the City of Aurora, Colorado. They include the Aurora Municipal Justice Center, Police District 2/History Museum building and the North Satellite Main Shop. The construction of this project was completed and placed in service in September 2010. The North Satellite Main Shop and Municipal Justice Center buildings each have an initial electricity production of approximately 138,700 kWh based on a 101 kW DC installed system size. The project leveraged a rebate program from Xcel Energy to improve project economics.
Arizona Agriculture
Spear Point Energy worked with a national engineering, procurement and construction (“EPC”) firm to organize and finance a solar system for a large agriculture producer in Arizona.. The 950 kW PV system will help run cold storage facilities while providing lower cost and secure energy pricing. System installation will cause minimal disturbance to operations, while maintaining the highest level performance possible. It is under construction and expected to be completed by Fall 2012.
